Animorphs: The Illusion

Heya folks, we’re proud to present our review of a fan-favorite book in the series, The Illusion. This is a highly praised Tobias book that finally answers the question: how much does it take to kill a hawk? Our listeners were quick to point out that this is indeed a much darker book than some of our most recent entries, but I always felt that much of this series is “darker” than anyone remembers. This book was no exception. It brought back the themes of Tobias’s inner hawk-human debate, and introduced a new character in Taylor that is a sort of mirror to Tobias. Very interesting stuff. We also continue to see changes in our main cast, particularly in Jake, Tobias, and Rachel (at least in this book). Heck, even Ax seems like he’s growing up, since it’s hard to imagine an Andalite being okay with someone acquiring and morphing him. That’s shorms for ya!

This speak: The Animorphs (and Ax, I guess) have a new problem. The Yeerks are creating a new special weapon that will give the team a real headache: a demorphing ray. If it works, the team is kind of boned. Jake is seriously stressed out about it, but the team comes up with a plan: Tobias will acquire Ax, and give himself up to the Yeerks to make them think the ray doesn’t work. The ensuing mission sees Tobias turning himself in at the latest Yeerk-pool entry, where Sub-Visser 51 AKA “Taylor” the volunteer controller is in charge. Taylor/SV51 is a sadistic lunatic that takes pleasure in torturing Tobias. Without his friends around to bail him out, Tobias’s goose may finally be cooked! Can Tobias escape with his life? Will they ever acquire and morph Ax again outside of this book?? And who will Tobias ask to the Prom: Rachel or Taylor?! All that and more when we review Animorphs book #33, The Illusion.
